Energy & Carbon Project Delivery Case Study
Expert energy cost management for a global pharmaceutical customer.
The Challenge
Our pharmaceutical customer wanted to significantly reduce operational energy expenses across their diverse estate, which included multiple sites and various building types including laboratories, manufacturing facilities and offices.
They faced increasing financial pressure to mitigate and control the risks stemming from energy market volatility and required increased efficiencies and effectiveness to manage their sustainability practices.
Simultaneously, they needed to maintain strict adherence to energy specific regulatory requirements and were seeking an experienced and strategic FM provider who could guide them through each step of the process.
Our Approach
We provided an Integrated Facilities Management model with both soft and hard services. This included support for a range of different sized projects which targeted ongoing improvements and strategic advice. The ultimate goal was the optimal running of their facilities at peak performance.
Specifically looking at addressing the customer's energy saving challenges, we implemented an intelligent, long-term solution. To gain the full picture of their current and historical energy costs, we conducted a detailed retrospective energy bill audit spanning several years. This analysis provided valuable insights that enabled us to rigorously challenge the energy supplier's previous billing practices, resulting in significant rebates and reduced future energy costs.
Additionally, we employed benchmarking data to undertake price comparisons, allowing our customer to have reassurance that they are securing the most competitive rates. To maintain accuracy, efficiency and control, we have put in place an ongoing energy billing audit process.
The Results
We have established a relationship with our customer that is built on responsiveness and close collaboration to solve immediate challenges and achieve strategic ambitions. By applying the expertise of our energy management team, we helped our customer optimise their energy costs to achieve these significant results:
- Over one million in energy savings – £1.1 million of energy costs recovered from the energy supplier.
- Multiple supplier billing errors identified – including incorrect capacity charges for securing a sufficient supply of electricity.
- Future energy costs security and control – correct charging structure applied for ongoing billing.
- UK-ETS allowances – carbon emission reporting figures corrected, saving the costs of unnecessary UK-Emissions Trading System allowances.
EMCOR UK have been instrumental in helping us achieve accurate billing. Their thorough approach and ongoing support have made a significant impact on our bottom line.
