Hampshire County Council

What we helped achieve

We first began working with Hampshire County Council (HCC) in the 1980s. Since then, our dedication and proven track record has seen our remit grow. We now provide planned maintenance, reactive fabric maintenance and emergency response services for 372 key public service buildings including: fire stations, schools, libraries, museums, care homes, activity centres, office accommodation and HCC’s emergency planning unit and data centre. The council chose us for our value for money; excellent service levels; capability and understanding of their budgetary requirements.

Some of the benefits we’ve brought

  • Reduced catering equipment maintenance costs by 25%, saving £20k
  • Improved cost efficiency and helped keep HCC on-budget
  • Developed safe systems of works specific to environments used by vulnerable people
  • Improved health and safety by introducing a desk glider access platform

The challenges we had to overcome

  • The facilities are used by children and vulnerable adults - CRB checks are carried out on our engineers before they begin work in these areas
  • Minimising impact on a variety of building users - we are flexible and approachable and plan our works to minimise the impact
  • Critical mechanical and electrical infrastructure at their data centre - we developed emergency operating procedures
  • The importance of cost savings to local government - we continuously review to find improvements to generate savings
  • 18,000 reactive callouts per annum - we set up a dedicated helpdesk team

How we helped

  • Provided a highly secure environment for their data - we test systems and processes, and carry out planned power down exercises, where a loss of mains electrical power is simulated
  • Created flexible solutions to evolving needs - we work collaboratively to continually improve account planning
  • Introduced the IT system: Agility - it improved decision-making due to the visibility of live call data
  • Provided real-time management information and helped track their most costly buildings - our engineers use hand-held devices linked to Agility and finance systems
  • Saved time, fuel and money - we fitted all vehicles with trackers to quickly allocate the nearest engineer
  • Saved 25% on school catering equipment maintenance - we developed an in-house catering engineering team
