Japan Tobacco

What we helped achieve

Our work with Japan Tobacco International (JTI) began in 2002. They chose us for our flexibility in reacting to their changing needs, and our understanding of their specific requirements. We manage and maintain retail tobacco display and storage units and are responsible for after engineering and logistics for their 22,000 outlets in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. From supermarket giants like Asda, Tesco and Morrisons to small independent retailers and petrol forecourts, our support helps maxmise JTI’s sales growth in a market that’s getting tougher all the time.

Some of the benefits we’ve brought

  • Launched a new automated stock control management system that reduced costs by 40%
  • 25% cost savings on high-demand products like retail display unit shutters compared to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM)
  • Introduced proactive lighting maintenance which reduced call-outs by 33%
  • Introduced vehicle tracking to give quicker response times to reactive call-outs
  • Significantly helped to improve their health and safety record
  • Quicker response for material supplies, improving customer service

The challenges we had to overcome

  • Increasing costs of parts due to OEM control - we reduced costs by 40% and improved delivery times, through sourcing alternative suppliers and by standardising parts such as shutters, LED controls and locks
  • New tobacco legislation - provided installation and post-installation engineering support to ensure all tobacco sales units are covered and ensure regulatory compliance with regards to the operation and availability of the installed solution. Our engineers are also UKPIA qualified.
  • Quick response times to 16,000 callouts per annum - we deployed an automated stock control management system so engineers can order parts quickly, and vehicle trackers so that we can deploy the nearest engineer to the callout
  • Frequent portfolio changes - we established links to JTI’s own electronic database, so maintenance on new sites is covered immediately

How we helped

  • Created a Northern Ireland presence - we established permanent engineers covering 900 sites
  • Improved health and safety - we have been involved in the modification of approximately 2000 sites to prevent health and safety issues
  • Provide peace of mind - achieved a 98% pass mark on the annual BP accreditation audit, demonstrating our capabilities on petrol forecourts
  • Minimised waste and cost - we designed a hazardous waste bag for fluorescent tubes that lowered the risk of breakage and reduced costs
  • Reduced costs of light switch installations by 96% - we deployed a remote controlled socket adaptor
  • Reduced start up stock of a new unit by 50% - through smart purchasing

Service scope

  • Planned preventative and reactive maintenance for building fabric and electrical and security systems
  • Materials procurement
